Luxury Comfort in the Mountains
We stayed at Bweza Gorilla Lodge near the end of a 3 week road trip in Uganda and felt as though we were arriving home. From the hospitality and pride... read more of owner Wyclef Rushaju to the welcoming staff (shout out to Aida, Gilbert, and Saturday!) to the gorgeous views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and area activities, it was not only 3 nights/4 days well spent but difficult to leave.
The large dining/lounge area is bright and comfortable with huge windows, big murals, and a lovely deck. Our room was comfortable, spacious, well-appointed, squeaky clean, and had its own large deck. The food was fabulous and I had to ask about the tea masala used for my African tea, spiced, so I could purchase some before heading home.
Bweza was our base for an amazing gorilla trek in Mgahinga National Park, a local hike that included a visit with a Rushaga Gate ranger and local Batwa men who sang for us, interactions with and a song and dance performance by women from the community, a visit to a girls' skills center started by the GLOW women's empowerment project, planting trees on the property, spotting 3-horned chameleons, great birding right from the decks, and evening fires.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! More
We absolutely loved our time at Bweza! The location could not be better for gorilla trekking from the Rushaga gate (we walked there one day), and the grounds and surrounding... read more area are stunning. Even with all the amazing activities to do, some of our favorite time was spent sitting on the deck watching the birds and forested hills of Bwindi.
What really made our trip special though was Wyclef and his team. Starting with communication before our booking, Wyclef was always super helpful and responsive as we planned our stay. He helped us get our trekking permits and arranged transportation from Kigali. In our short stay at Bwindi, we learned so much about the wildlife, people, history, and politics of Uganda from chatting with Wyclef at dinner or around the fire in the evening. We hope to go back to Uganda some day and see more of this beautiful country, and when we do we'll definitely be getting back in touch with Wyclef! (He guides tours throughout the country, so ask him about that if you're planning to see more than Bwindi).
The rest of the Bweza team were all so kind and welcoming. They made us feel at home and comfortable throughout our stay. We only wished we had more time there!
Mealtimes are undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the lodge – an extravagant and mouth-watering affair! Discover the flourishing organic vegetable garden, and relish sublime farm-to-table dining with fresh produce and ingredients.
